Livermore fire department sees change in command

On April 11, the Livermore Fire Protection District hosted a "Hail and Farewell" dinner to honor the retirement of one chief and celebrate the appointment of another.

After leading the department for 10 years, Larry Peterson announced his retirement from the chief position in February. Jim Herrington, former Livermore assistant chief and seven-year member of the department, is now leading the volunteer firefighters. He was elected by the members and approved for the position by the board of directors in March.

Peterson started his time with Livermore Fire in 1991, and says he will continue to serve the community as an EMT and a firefighter. Over his 15-year career with Livermore, Peterson said, some of his favorite memories came from working on wildland fires and watching the slurry bombers drop fire retardant. He added that the best part is working with fellow firefighters.

"What I've enjoyed the most is the people I've gotten to work with ... and the friendships I've gained," he said. "That was the most important thing to me, the camaraderie."

Peterson also said that the primary reason for his involvement with Livermore Fire is the opportunity to help people in distress.

Members of the department spoke about how Peterson had influenced their lives. At the end of the ceremony, Herrington presented Peterson with the chief's helmet saying, "I may be stepping into your shoes, but I'll never be able to wear your helmet."
