New service for caregiversVolunteers of America has a new service for seniors and caregivers in Larimer County. The program, called Caring Companions, organizes volunteers to visit with local seniors, allowing family caregivers to enjoy a temporary break from their duties. This will provide caregivers with the opportunity to run errands, visit with friends or simply take some time for themselves. Seniors will benefit by having weekly companionship, someone to listen to their concerns and the opportunity to participate in fun activities. "Caregivers often become so absorbed in the responsibilities of providing care for others, that they don't make time for themselves," said program coordinator Vicki Warfield. "Lack of personal time leaves caregivers feeling stressed and tired." Colorado has the seventh fastest growing elderly population in the country. As this population grows, so does the need for caregivers. More than two thirds of elderly Americans with disabilities receive care only through friends, neighbors, and relatives. Caring Companions is facilitated by Volunteers of America, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those in need. The local office of VOA also offers many other services to seniors, including Meals On Wheels, handyman services, congregate meals and affordable housing. To find out more information for a senior who might benefit from a weekly, two-hour visit, or to volunteer, call Vicki Warfield at 472-9630. |
