Rules for road names

The LaPorte Area Planning Advisory Committee is soliciting ideas for new names for County Road 54G. The suggested name should have meaning for LaPorte, such as historical significance. The name will be changed only if a majority of property owners along 54G approve the idea.

According to Karlin Goggin, the county's addressing coordinator, there are several rules for names that will be acceptable to the county. Many of the rules are dictated by what helps or hinders emergency personnel in finding addresses.

The following are some of the road-naming rules.

  • The name must be unique in Larimer County.
  • Prefixes that are discouraged: old, new, upper, lower. Directionals are not allowed (for example, West Laporte Avenue).
  • Suffixes allowed are Avenue, Boulevard, Circle, Court, Drive, Lane, Parkway, Place, Road, Street and Way.
  • No proper names are allowed unless they have historical significance.
  • The name must be easy to pronounce, with a common spelling.
  • In most cases, the road may not be named for a business or trade name.

So far, the county commissioners have voted to retain several historic road names in northern Larimer County. They are Overland Trail, Bingham Hill Road, Rist Canyon Road, Old Flowers Road and Red Mountain Road
