Tips for job seekers
Job center swamped by the unemployed
Maureen Harter, employment center manager for the Larimer County Workforce
Center, offered some tips for people looking for work. There are resources
to help people get through the current economic crisis, she emphasized.
The following are her ideas.
- Come to the Workforce Center for information and resources. There are
offices in Fort Collins and Loveland, and all services are free.
- Networking is the number-one way to find jobs, so it's important to be
out in the community. Volunteering is a good way to network, while doing
something positive. It builds relationships and looks good on a resumé.
- Be flexible. Be open to new opportunities, realizing that in a recession
one can't be as particular about a job. Also consider whether moving to
an area with more opportunities is an option.
- Offer sweat equity. Volunteer some time with a start-up business, and
if it's successful, a paid position could open up.
- Stay positive. Look to friends, neighbors and nonprofit organizations
for support. Being positive "shows through in an interview," Harter stated.
