Alexander wins bid for REA board seat

Rural Fort Collins resident Roger Alexander, a member of the PV Pioneers, on his third try captured enough votes for a seat on the Poudre Valley Rural Electric Association Board of Directors.

Running for one of the Larimer County seats, Alexander defeated Livermore Rancher Ed Hansen with a vote of 2,115 to 1,758. Hansen has served on the board for 26 years.

Two incumbents defeated the other two candidates fielded by PV Pioneers, an organization made up of REA members opposed to building more coal-fired power plants.

Votes were tallied at the 70th annual membership meeting on March 28.

Four positions on the 11-member board were open for election, as well as amendments to the association articles of incorporation. Changes in the bylaws passed with 2,783 members in favor and 563 opposed.

Running for a board seat representing Boulder County, incumbent director Ron Sutherland with 2,037 votes defeated challenger Steve Szabo with 1,806 votes. Representing a Larimer County position, incumbent director Rick Johnson with 2,257 votes defeated challenger Jan Peterson with 1,582 votes. Incumbent director Gail Spencer-Hole ran unopposed for another Larimer County seat.

PVREA is a member-owned, not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative. From its pool of 29,823 eligible voters, 3,930 cast ballots.
