State and federal forestry representatives will host a bark beetle workshop
for the public on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Livermore Community Hall.
Featured speaker Dave Leatherman, former Colorado State Forest Service
entomologist, will provide comprehensive background information as well
as an historical perspective of beetle activity seen during his long tenure.
Foresters from the Fort Collins District of the Colorado State Forest Service
and U.S. Forest Service will offer informal dialogue and updates regarding
this year's field observations. The foresters will share information on
what kinds of forest management treatments are being done and "what is
and is not working in terms of pine beetle management," noted organizer
Gregory Zausen of the Fort Collins office of the CSFS.
"We have seen an increase in bark beetle impacts in Larimer County over
the last year, and we have a lot of concerned landowners," Zausen said.
"We hope to educate landowners on the current status of the pine beetle
epidemic and the options they have for managing their trees. Any concerned
landowners should come to ask questions and learn about their options."
Zausen listed these frequently asked questions: What are the best strategies
for prevention, management and clean-up? Can we learn anything from our
western neighbors who have already experienced significant tree mortality?
The workshop is free to the public, and coffee and cookies will be available.
