A Fort Collins grandpa is passing along the tried and true insights his grandmother discovered through a life of gardening.

"Secrets From My Grandma's Garden" by Don Eversoll is a quick and delightful read for both longtime and new gardeners. In it, Eversoll takes readers back to his grandmother's Nebraska farm where he recalls ventures down the garden path as "a trip into the heart and soul of a loving, gentle woman who cared deeply about teaching her grandkids a little something about how to grow your own food."

From building good soil to harvest, Eversoll provides bucketfuls of tips to get a garden growing. He offers planting guides and homemade fertilizer recipes, tonics to kill garden pests and a host of little-known garden facts.

To top off the gardening season, there is a chapter with six of grandma's favorite recipes. Readers can learn to make homemade chicken and noodles and flavorful deep-dish apple pie, for example.

The former owner of a wildflower seed company and heirloom vegetable seed firm, Eversoll calls himself "an entrepreneur by trade and gardener by heart." He lives on a small acreage in Fort Collins with his wife, Terri, where he passes on his gardening wisdom to his children and grandchildren.

Eversoll's 112-page book is peppered with quips and quotes, including one that overhangs his garden gate: "This garden is a sanctuary for the soul, a living wellspring of faith, hope and promise. The bounty and beauty of the good Earth belong to The Creator, and all who come here are witness to his Grace and Everlasting Love!"

The book sells for $12 and is available at local outlets including all Jax stores, Ranch-Way Feeds and Fort Collins Nursery. The author can be reached at don_eversoll@comcast.net.

Eversoll is already penning his second book, "Secrets From Grandma's Kitchen."
