Poster art winner inspired by area wildlife

By Marilyn Colter

Bears are prevalent in Red Feather Lakes so it shouldn't be a surprise to see one hanging around the village in this year's Fine Arts Festival poster art. Red Feather Lakes artist Shelby Van Buskirk, who painted the winning image of an adult bear in a meadow strewn with wildflowers, is the winning poster artist for the 2004 event. She will win a $250 award for her entry.

"I've wanted to take part in the contest in previous years," she said, "but I wasn't able to get myself in gear in time." Van Buskirk, who usually paints in oils, switched to acrylics for this painting so that she could finish in time for this year's contest deadline.

The painting will be featured on the collector's poster this year, and will also be auctioned off during the Silent Auction at the Fine Arts Festival, May 28 and 29. This year the proceeds of the auction will benefit the Red Feather Lakes Community Library expansion project. The money raised during the auction will help build and furnish a new addition to the building.

Van Buskirk, who has lived in northern Colorado most of her life, learned to love oil painting in high school art class, where she also met her husband. She studied through formal classes and with local artists to develop her talent. She loves realism, she says, and this painting was inspired by the wildlife in the area, and the view of flowers, meadows and mountains from her back yard.

"It's my first bear," she says, "but I hope to do much more with wildlife in the future."

Those who attend the opening artist reception can begin bidding on Van Buskirk's piece and the many other fine works donated for the event, as well as services and products from local businesses, at Fox Acres Country Club, May 28, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There is an admission fee of $7.50. After the reception, the silent auction will move to the Chapel of the Pines as part of the Fine Arts Festival Art Show and Sale, and will close May 29 at 4 p.m. Signed copies of the poster will be available throughout the Fine Arts Festival and at several locations in the village.

Other events include the Fine Arts Festival Art Show and Sale, a juried art show on May 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The show features work in many media from local and regional artists. Wrapping up the festival, The Hard Rock Writers, a group of local writers, will read from original works on May 29 at 4 p.m. at the Red Feather Lakes Community Library.
