Deputy won't do time in jailLarimer County sheriff's deputy Ian Stewart, 28, who was charged with the June 29 traffic death of deputy Travis Sass, will not spend time in jail. Stewart pleaded guilty on Dec. 21 to a misdemeanor charge of careless driving resulting in death. He received a one-year deferred sentence in connection with the crash on U.S. Highway 287. The sentence includes an order that he receive no traffic tickets greater than five points for the next year. Sass, 30, was a passenger in a patrol vehicle driven by Stewart, who made a left-hand turn in front of an oncoming vehicle. The two deputies were en route to the department's shooting range north of Ted's Place when the accident occurred. A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office said Sass's family had requested that no charges be filed against Stewart, so prosecutors followed the family's wishes to the extent of recommending a lenient sentence. |
