New leader takes PSD helm in JulyIn March, the Poudre School District Board of Education signed a contract with Gerald "Jerry" Wilson to become the district's new superintendent. Wilson will receive an annual salary of $170,000. Wilson's contract is for a two-year term beginning July 1. In addition to salary, he receives a $600 monthly stipend for job-related travel expenses incurred in his personal vehicle. The district will also pay up to $10,000 for moving expenses and temporary housing. Wilson is currently superintendent for Hermiston School District in Oregon. In a written message to the district after completing contract negotiations, he said: "During the selection process, I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and hearing staff and community members talk about schools and student achievements with such pride and enthusiasm. The excitement continues to build as I anticipate joining Poudre School District in a few short months." The Board's decision to hire Wilson followed a lengthy process involving community and staff focus groups, nationwide recruiting, a community screening process, interviews conducted by the board and employee groups, community and staff forums, and a visit by PSD representatives to Hermiston. Wilson will take over from interim superintendent Nancy Wright. "Nancy Wright and I have had several conversations and she is helping me become acquainted with the district," Wilson said in his letter. "I am so impressed with her leadership and grateful for her help." Prior to his current position, Wilson served as the superintendent in Pinedale, Wyo. He also served as a principal, curriculum director, middle school teacher, and high school curriculum chair and teacher in Big Piney, Wyo. Prior to that, he served as a Fulbright exchange teacher in London, England. Wilson received his Ph.D. in educational curriculum and instruction from the University of Wyoming; a master's in education curriculum and supervision from Idaho State University; and a bachelor's in philosophy and English from the University of Maryland. "From the time I became a teacher corps intern 28 years ago, I have been devoted to public education and believe deeply in our mission to educate each child every day to become a democratic citizen in our global community," Wilson said. |
