Art Auction most successful yet

It has been a decade since the Richard Schmid Fine Art Auction began as
a fund-raiser for the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department. The anniversary
attracted art lovers from across the country, who spent a record-setting
$265,000 on painting and sculptures.
At this year's event, Schmid was the center of attention as lines formed
to meet him. Schmid commented that he felt fortunate to have been part
of this event and that initially, artists had to be asked to participate.
Now artists flock to be included, resulting in the rental of larger tents
and the addition of a silent auction. This year drew 144 artists. The centerpiece
for the live auction was a Schmid painting titled "Whetstone Brook," which
commanded $80,000. His second painting, "Roses," sold for $20,000.
"This is America at its best," Schmid said, as he watched the art auction
under the big tent in the mountain meadow. "It is amazing how the power
of art can unite a community."
Proceeds from the auction help support the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department,
which depends entirely on donations to protect homes and people in more
than 100 square miles.
Schmid graciously signed black tote bags (with silver ink), copies of Southwest
Art and any of a number of books he has written over the years. He took
the time to talk to each individual and personalized his signature. The
auction has generated thousands of dollars to build new fire stations,
purchase fire trucks, modernize the radio system and train firefighters.
This year's event with an attendance in excess of 4,500, netted over $129,000
toward the purchase of a fire truck that can spray fire-retardant foam
on homes.
