Wellington seniors moved into the 2,000-square-foot addition to their
center at 3800 Wilson Ave. on Feb. 23.
Anderson Construction of Wellington performed the expansion and renovation
of the 27-year-old center for a total cost of about $300,000 for the building
and $40,000 for the parking lot. Money came from the town's general fund,
and the expenditures totaled less than 5 percent over budget.
A shiny new kitchen allows the senior center to distribute meals to area
seniors three days a week with greater comfort and efficiency. Last year
the center served approximately 2,500 meals.
"We have 65 members on our roster," said Dotty Lowry, center coordinator,
"including four that have joined since the 23rd and two junior volunteers."
Junior volunteers are younger than the 55-year age requirement for becoming
center members.
Town government will use a portion of the new building as well. Although
that section is not quite completed, town administrator Larry Lorentzen
said the first board meeting will most likely be held there on April 11.
