Alumni association plans time capsuleThis month's festivities for the Wellington Centennial will kick off Sept. 8 when the Wellington Centennial Committee hosts a groundbreaking ceremony for the centennial time capsule. The ceremony gets under way at 11:30 a.m. at Wellington Junior High School, 4001 Wilson Ave., in front of the archway preserved from the old Wellington High School building. The time capsule, donated by the Wellington Alumni Association, will represent the last 100 years of Wellington history, merging the past with present-day life. The capsule will preserve information on politicians, teachers, business owners, students and families to serve as an educational tool for future generations. Invited guests include junior high principal Alicia Durand, Eyestone Elementary principal David Sobson, Wellington Mayor Larry Noel, representatives of the Wellington Alumni Association, Larimer County Commissioner Kathay Rennels, state Sen. Steve Johnson, Wellington community leaders, students and families. Three days of centennial events, Friday through Saturday, Sept. 16 through 17, will take place around Wellington's downtown area. Cleveland Avenue, the town's main street will be closed between First and Sixth streets starting at noon Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday. On Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., the closure will extend to County Road 9 for the centennial parade. More information about the centennial celebration is available at town hall, 568-3381. |
