U.S. Forest Service firefighters took advantage of recent snow accumulation to burn slash piles on Feb. 25 and 26. Plans are to continue burning Feb. 27 along Johnny Park Road, located south and west of the Big Elk Meadows Subdivision; Grizzly Gulch, located south of Estes Park and west of Highway 36; and at Pingree Hill, located between Rustic and the Shambhala Mountain Center. If conditions are favorable, burning could continue at these locations throughout the week.

Conditions are evaluated each day of the burn to determine if ignition will take place. Wind, fuel moisture, staffing and snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs.

To date, the Canyon Lakes Ranger District has burned over 3,000 piles this winter.
